Dental Bonding: What It Is, How Long It Lasts and What to Expect
If a dentist has raised bonding for a chip, a gap or a tooth you are unhappy with, the useful questions are the simple ones: what the material does, how long it tends to last, how it compares with porcelain, and whether anything needs dealing with first. Here is each in turn.
What bonding is, and what the visit involves
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that uses a tooth-colored composite resin material to repair chips, fill gaps or change the shape and color of a tooth. You can usually get dental bonding done in a single office visit, and the procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth (Cleveland Clinic).
How long it lasts
The bonding material typically lasts between three and 10 years before it needs to be touched up or replaced (Cleveland Clinic).
How it compares with porcelain veneers and crowns
Porcelain veneers and dental crowns require removing a significant amount of enamel so the materials stick, but dental bonding typically doesn't require enamel removal (Cleveland Clinic).
The comparison goes the other way on staining and durability. Bonding doesn't resist stains as well as porcelain restorations, it can chip over time, and it is not as long-lasting as other options, like veneers or crowns (Cleveland Clinic).
