Signs a Tooth May Need a Root Canal, and Why Only an Exam Can Tell

Insights for a healthier, more confident smile.

Something about one of your teeth has changed, and you want to know whether it is the kind of change that ends in a root canal. Searching turns up lists of signs, and a list is a reasonable place to start. It is not a place to finish. What follows takes both halves of that question in turn.

What might point to a problem inside a tooth

Root canal symptoms might include a pimple or boil on the gums that may ooze pus, a swollen jaw from a trapped infection, a darkened tooth, a loose tooth, pain that spreads to the jaw, face or nearby teeth, pain when chewing or touching the tooth, and tender or swollen gums (Cleveland Clinic).

Read that list for its verbs. These are symptoms that might be involved, and this article will not put it more strongly. That is not evasiveness on anyone's part. It is the limit of what a list of signs can do from a distance.

Why the examination is the part that answers it

Before treatment, your provider examines the tooth with X-rays and other tests to confirm the infection, and your dentist can help you decide whether a root canal is the right option for you (Cleveland Clinic).

That is the order of things. The examination is where what is happening in the tooth is established; the signs on their own do not establish it, which is why there is no version of that list that works as a self-test. And whether to go ahead is a decision a dentist can help you make.

What this article does not settle

Some related questions are answered elsewhere. For help working out whether what you are noticing might be a dental emergency and where to go, see our article on how to tell whether it is an emergency. What the treatment itself consists of is covered in what root canal treatment involves.
